Convenient Cannabis

Most agree these days that people need access to cannabis. More specifically, they need access points. Many live in states with no recreational or medical cannabis laws. What are their choices?

I was a medical cannabis growers for 15 years and I’ve helped people find relief from life long debilitating pain and other issues,  easing their symptoms and giving them hope for their future, all due to the powerful therapeutic properties of cannabinoids.

We’ve seen that where there is recreational or medical cannabis laws people tend to self-medicate with opiates and illegal drugs less. Still, half of the country remains without regulated cannabis and people have no choice but to buy it on the black market or substitute it with alcohol and dangerous drugs. How can people in states without cannabis regulations get relief and benefit from cannabis use?

What about the green states?

What about the other half of the US population that lives in a state that has recreational or medical laws? Due to decades of stigma surrounding cannabis use many people aren’t comfortable going into a recreational cannabis store as a first time user. There’s a whole segment of the population that have never tried cannabis because of the stigma attached to it, and they are reluctant to walk into a cannabis store and risk having their neighbors, their community or family members see them going into a weed shop.

The light at the end of the tunnel

What if those same people were able to stop at a convenience store on the way home from work or the gym- they’re tired, they’re stressed, they can’t sleep, they have aches and pains – and there in front of them at the counter is a cannabis product. There’s no friends or family there to judge, it’s right there in their neighborhood convenience store or grocery, and it’s LEGAL, so they take a chance. Then the same thing happens to them as has happened to millions of cannabis users; they go home and take their cannabis product and they find relief.

people demand access

In Washington state several years ago, you had to drive to find a state run liquor store if you wanted tequila for your evening wind down margarita. But Washingtonians demanded more access points for liquor and those laws were overturned.

There are over 150,000 convenience stores and over 40,000 grocery stores in the US. It’s only a matter of time before prohibitive cannabis regulations go the same route as alcohol prohibition. Consumers will be able to stop at their local convenience and buy cannabis as easily as they are able to buy a bottle of wine or a six pack of beer. We must answer consumer demand for cannabis by making local access points more plentiful and there are no more plentiful access points than convenience and grocery.
