Banned for Life

Last week Facebook banned us from creating Facebook ads – for life. Our transgression? We’re still not sure. Facebook support said that our ads that don’t comply with their “Advertising Policies or other standards” even though we put a great deal of effort into improving our content specifically for Facebook and Google ads. We had removed any images that could be flagged, we created landing pages, we even edited our social media posts to delete content that might provoke their sensors. So what triggered the flag and subsequent ban? We may never know.

What is Facebook’s official policy for CBD?

I read Facebook’s ad policies top to bottom and there is no mention of CBD or hemp. The policies say to avoid using images of either recreational or medical marijuana. We have no images of marijuana. They also say to avoid using images that imply the use of a recreational drug. Fine there, too. In their rejection and ban communications, they don’t specify which policy they think you aren’t following or how to fix the issue.

What now?

I asked my friend and cannabis marketing pro, Alex Hodschayan (alexhodschayan.com), for advice. Here’s what he had to say:

“Unless you’re a topical brand, [Facebook’s] probably not going to let you post an ad with CBD in the copy. Try using generic copy and including a label featuring CBD in your imagery. If they shut you down, be persistent. Keep requesting reviews with slight or no revisions made. Appeal until you are given the option to contact support, and if you’re lucky you’ll eventually get somebody on the phone who can help you.”

Thanks, Alex. We’ll keep trying!

What’s the alternative?

Currently, we are running Google ads and seeing some success there, and continuing marketing through social media platforms such as Instagram and LinkedIn. Not to be self-revelatory, but blog posts such as this one have been important in giving our customers insight into our company and building confidence in our product. We will also continue to be involved in cannabis/hemp industry events, such as Emerge Virtual Cannabis Conference coming up in September. We hope to see you there!

Our Commitment

I’ve been in the cannabis industry for 20 years. This is not my first rodeo and not my first time fighting legality issues surrounding cannabis and hemp. As a medical cannabis provider I worked with people battling life-long disease who successfully used cannabis to treat nausea, pain, inflammation and a host of other issues. There are so many incredible uses for cannabis and many more to be discovered, which is why we are here today working with companies like Facebook to allow us fair market access for our products. We know the laws and marketing restrictions on hemp and cannabis products will change. Until then, we will continue putting up the good fight to bring our cannabis products to the world.

A great, big thank you to our customers for your reviews. Please keep them coming in, we love to hear from you!

Sincerely,
